Often customers know they want a powered mobility device, but not sure which to get.  The following are general guidelines, but most devices can be used in multiple ways.

• Power wheelchairs have the best maneuverability and are most typically used indoors.  They operate with a joystick.  There are numerous types, from portable models that fold up or disassemble, all the way to larger chairs with captain’s seats and functions like powered elevation, recline, and more.

• Scooters  are more typically for getting around outside of one’s living space, whether it’s a hallway, out to the mailbox, the store, or to take along on a vacation.  They have a tiller (steering column), and operate by pushing levers.  Like power wheelchairs, there is a huge variety of scooters, from tiny folding models to larger models that can handle large weights.  Similar to power wheelchairs, scooters can be highly portable for outings or vacations.

• 3 wheel scooters have the advantages of maneuverability, lighter weight, lower cost, and for some customers, more comfortable foot position (because there are no fenders).

• 4 wheel scooters are favored by customers who want to maximize stability, especially if uneven surfaces are involved.
